Uneven tone and pigmentation concerns

Darker marks after spots, patchy facial pigmentation and a new individual mark need different assessment. Understanding the cause comes before choosing a peel or other cosmetic procedure.

Not all darker marks are alike

A flat mark left after inflammation is different from an indented acne scar. Broader patches may have another cause, such as melasma. The cause, depth and your skin’s response to irritation influence which approach is appropriate.

If your concern is a change in surface texture, read our acne scars guide. If spots are still active, start with acne and breakouts.

What Sarah needs to know

Explain when the pigmentation appeared and whether it has changed. Mention previous treatments, irritation, hormonal changes, current skincare and sun protection. A consultation considers your skin tone and treatment history as well as the appearance of the mark.

Options for selected concerns

Sarah may discuss a NeoStrata ProSystem peel or the Toskani Microneedling — Hyperpigmentation service after assessing the cause. Ask why the proposed approach is appropriate for your skin and what preparation and aftercare it would involve.

Peels and other procedures are not suitable for every pigment condition and can worsen darkening in some people. Melasma can recur, so sun protection and an ongoing care plan are part of the discussion. Medical assessment may be needed before a cosmetic procedure.

A changing mark needs medical assessment

Do not assume a new or changing individual mark is simply cosmetic pigmentation. A mark that is changing, bleeding or not healing needs medical assessment before cosmetic treatment.

Can one session remove pigmentation?

A particular outcome or number of sessions cannot be promised. Agree a realistic goal, review point and full cost before proceeding. Ask about recurrence, pigment changes and alternatives, including choosing no procedure.
