Acne and breakouts: where to start
Active spots, congestion and old acne scars need different approaches. The first step is understanding your breakouts and deciding whether pharmacy, GP or dermatology care should come first.
Active acne is different from a scar
Blackheads and whiteheads differ from inflamed spots or deeper painful lumps. Acne can also leave colour changes or lasting changes in skin texture. A procedure aimed at an old scar is not a substitute for controlling active acne.
When medical care comes first
Painful, persistent or scarring acne needs medical advice. If your skin is affecting your wellbeing, mention this when seeking help. Sarah can discuss whether a cosmetic skin consultation is useful alongside the appropriate medical care; you do not need to choose a cosmetic procedure to take the next step.
What to discuss at your consultation
Bring details of your current skincare, medicines and previous acne treatments. Explain where you get breakouts, whether they are painful and whether marks or scars are developing. This helps distinguish current inflammation from concerns that remain after spots settle.
Cosmetic options for selected concerns
A NeoStrata ProSystem peel may be considered for suitable congestion concerns after assessment. Product choice depends on your skin and treatment history.
The Toskani Microneedling — Acne-Prone Skin service requires separate assessment once inflammatory breakouts have settled. Its name does not mean microneedling should be performed over inflamed spots or infection.
What if my acne has settled?
If your main concern is indentation or uneven texture, read our acne scars guide. For flat darker marks, see uneven pigmentation. Separating these concerns helps the consultation focus on the right goal.
